3.4 - Fuel Sender Testing
Fuel sender resistances vary between 0 and close to 3,000 Ohms. Remember that any additional resistance in the circuit will influence the readings in the instrument panel. Get the fuel level sender resistance values in the appropriate electrical shop manual. The specs will give you the upper (full) and lower (empty) values.
Before removing the fuel tank to verify the gauge, it is possible to test the harness toward the instrument panel first.
Special tools are available to simulate gauge values in the harness.
If the gauge works properly in the instrument panel, then drop the fuel tank and inspect the fuel sender.
On OBDII models, the fuel level sender goes to the PCM as the computer needs this information to perform tests.
