5.2 - Typical Problems

Cooling systems generate 3 types of problems.

First - System Leaks

The cooling system must be leak-free. All leaks must be repaired. Sometimes leaks are temperature-related and the system will only leak either when cold or hot. Retest after repair.

Second - Overheating

The overheating of an engine is usually related to the following conditions:

  • Low coolant liquid in the system;
  • Lack of airflow across the radiator;
  • Water pump or slow coolant circulation in the system;
  • Radiator cooling fan inoperative;
  • Thermostat stuck closed;
  • Pure cooling liquid in the system;
  • Air in the system;
  • Engine mechanical problems like engine timing, restricted exhaust system or worn water pump;
  • Air conditioning system affecting engine cooling when turned on when heat generated from the condenser.

Third - No Heat in the Vehicle

  • Thermostat stuck open;
  • Clogged heater core;
  • Pure cooling liquid in the system;
  • Stuck heater control valve or cable;
  • Temperature control mode door stuck in the cold position;
  • Air in the system.
